    A Home of Hope

Thank you to those of you who journeyed with us in Elliott’s House Build Project! Those of us who had the chance to be there to build all agreed that WE were the blessed ones…WE were the honored ones…WE were the privileged ones.

And for those of you who so generously GAVE and so powerfully PRAYED…we hope that these pictures will give you a glimpse into the fruit that came BECAUSE OF YOU…a glimpse into the honor that it was to get to know this family and give them a home…because if it weren’t for YOU, this could have never been possible…

Here’s a time-lapse video of the entire house being built in 90 seconds!

Here are a few still shots from throughout the day…

    Brian putting the door together
Taylor making sure everyone's putting the trim in correctly on the inside of the house

When the outside and the inside of the house were both completed, several people in our group went on a grocery shopping trip to stock them up with yummy, healthy food!! The rest of us stayed back and built their new beds, table, and chairs and installed their brand new stove.

    Their new beds and bedding!
Elliott helping me put together a chair for their new dining room table!
Their new dining room table, chairs, table cloth & stove! (Dishes and place mats not pictured.)

After all of the furniture was assembled and everything was ready, we closed the door and gathered outside in a circle.

We passed the keys to the house from person to person, and each one shared how meaningful it was to help build the home.

We presented Teresa and her two granddaughters, Isabel and Wendy, with a bible, a plaque commemorating the house, and, of course, the keys! While they walked inside, we all ran to the van to get the bags of groceries…

    Look at all that food!!
    Taylor knocked on the door…
And we all carried in the bags of food, one by one, and gathered in Teresa's new home to pray for her family and bless them.

Would you not agree with me, that…

    'TIS MORE BLESSED…
    TO GIVE…
    …THAN TO RECEIVE.

God bless this home, and the hands that gave to make it happen.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:

As we worked, my mind flooded with all of the people who gave to make this possible. Because this whole project was about “WE.” There is no way that Brian and I could have done this alone. The two of us, in and of ourselves, don’t have the money or the manpower to pull something like this off. There are MANY who make up the “WE” that built this home, and we want to take a moment to acknowledge them…

First of all, I can’t write one more word without mentioning the McCabes. Kari McCabe is one of my best friends from elementary school–yes, that’s right, we’ve been dear friends for over 22 years!! Kari’s son, Quinn, is just 12 days younger than Elliott and they are true bosom buddies (but that’s for another blog post :)). Well, when Kari and her husband heard what we were doing for Elliott’s birthday, they decided to turn Quinn’s birthday into the same outward blessing. So they asked for all gifts/money that would have been given to Quinn be directed toward the house build. They even took up an offering at their church! Between the McCabes, their family and friends, and their church, they raised 1/3 of the money we needed to build the house!! We could have never done it without them, and Brian and I were continually overwhelmed at not only their generosity, but the way that they carried this burden with us. We are so grateful for the way they invested in this project with us!!

Next, Brian’s family! His entire family made the trek down here to build the home with us. They were all so eager to be here to celebrate Elliott in this unique way and to jump right in and get some dirt under their fingernails (and lots of paint all over their hands, ha!)! 🙂 We are so grateful that each one of them could be here.

Third, our newest friends, our DTS classmates. Ahh, how we love them. 🙂 They couldn’t have been more excited to jump in and build this house, and it was a tremendous joy to have them with us. They have all become so dear to us in the last three months!

And last, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST…to all the people who so generously GAVE towards this home. YOU were an ESSENTIAL part…

  • Elliott’s First Christmas!

    Elliott’s First Christmas!

DISCLAIMER! I wrote this post the day after Christmas, and then was without internet to upload the photos! So, it’s late…but better late than never :). Enjoy!

I remember last Christmas so vividly…not the presents, not the people, not the events…no, all of my thoughts were consumed with the idea that next Christmas we would have Elliott with us…not inside my womb, but here with us. He would be 9 months old and he would wear Christmas jammies and he would destroy the wrapping paper we used to cover up his very first Christmas gifts…he would smile at us and wave at us and snuggle with us. He would dance to jingle bells in our arms and he would follow along as we read, “That’s Not My Reindeer” to him. We would get to celebrate this beautiful time of the year with him instead of waiting for him…

And I can’t even count the amount of times that tears have flooded my eyes this Christmas season as I realize that he is, indeed, here with us this Christmas. For the first year ever, I couldn’t think of a SINGLE thing to put on MY Christmas list, but I had an entire document filled with things that I wanted to get Elliott…I have everything I want right here in my sweet, perfect, little family. At the end of the day, all I care about is snuggling in Christmas jammies with Elliott and his handsome daddy…

Last year, however, when I was picturing this year’s Christmas, I could have never envisioned that we would be in three different countries within the month of December. I could have never envisioned that we wouldn’t have a home, or a Christmas tree, or a place to hang our stockings, or that we would get take-out on Christmas Eve. I could have never envisioned that we would just wrap two small gifts for Elliott because that’s literally all we had time to do. And I’ll be honest–there have indeed been a few times when I’ve had the slightest moment of sadness that I haven’t had a home to decorate and Christmas music playing 24 hours a day throughout our home since November. I haven’t had the time or the opportunity to carefully select and beautifully wrap Christmas presents. It hasn’t been a neat, tidy, perfectly orchestrated Christmas season…but it has been PERFECT for US. It has been perfect for Elliott, and it has been perfect for our family. We got to spend the hours we would normally spend shopping, putting up Christmas lights, cutting down a tree, and decorating instead being entirely outward focused…serving, loving, and bringing the gospel to those in real need. We got to simplify this year…majorly simplify…so that it is just our wonderful little family, waking up on Christmas morning in the home of a dear friend who let us stay in her house, opening a few simple gifts, and simply enjoying being together.

So now that you’re probably feeling pretty darn guilty that you have been running around like a crazy person this Christmas season, cutting in line at Toys R Us, and making sure that your kid had the most popular toy of 2011 sitting under the tree, and SERVING someone in need has perhaps been far from your mind, let me just be honest. I probably wouldn’t choose to do my Christmas like this every year…I’m not quite THAT holy, you know :). This isn’t going to turn into a sermon about Jesus being the reason for the season (although he IS, you know). (Sorry, couldn’t help myself.) I am  grateful that God gave us an opportunity to serve and travel this Christmas season, but you’d better believe I’m already picturing where our Christmas tree will go next year in our new rental house…and I’m already thinking about how I want to wrap Elliott’s presents…and I’m already thinking about the new Christmas CD I want to listen to next year… and I’m already thinking about the peppermint brickle that I’m going to bake…and the garland and the lights I will put up around our house…Ahh, only 364 more days to go!!  But for now, I am simply and overwhelmingly GRATEFUL. Grateful for our family, grateful for each of our families, grateful for our friends, grateful for the adventure the Lord has us on, grateful that Grammy Karen got us some Peppermint Bark so we had a fun dessert after eating take-out on Christmas Eve.

Here are a few picture highlights from our Christmas 2011!

"Probably this one…it smells like a BOOK!"
"Cool! A mirror book! I LOVE mirrors!"
"Oooh! I like Daddy's new boots! Can I try them on?"
"Whoa! A megaphone for Mommy so she can preach on the streets? What an awesome gift you picked out, Daddy!"
Our family on Christmas morning…Still in our pjs, of course
    Merry 1st Christmas!

  • Thankful…still!

This post is a little late, but since we’re STILL thankful, I figured it would be okay to post a post-Thanksgiving post :). (How many times and different ways can YOU use “post” in a sentence?)

We had a very unique Thanksgiving this year! The staff wanted to celebrate, despite the fact that we were in a country that doesn’t recognize the holiday. The only problem? No one knew how to cook a turkey. So the Mobergs, turkey extraordinaires, spoke up and volunteered to cook the turkey for the staff and the Dominican family of 5 who would be joining us.

We prepped the turkey and put it into the oven.

Brian, Elliott, and me preparing the turkey

Then we went for a swim!

…because what else do you do while the turkey is cooking?
    My little turkey shark 🙂

And then we got ready to eat!

    Carving the turkey!

We made the juicy turkey, bomb mashed potatoes, and boat loads of gravy. And–THANKFULLY–it all turned out quite deliciously!!

    Our plates! Mmmm!!

And here we all are, sooo stuffed!!!

The Crew (Danny & Danae, we miss you!)

    This was our…

…first Thanksgiving with our sweet baby Elliott!

…first Thanksgiving in a foreign country.

…first Thanksgiving where we went for a swim outside while the turkey cooked.

…first Thanksgiving where it was hot enough to wear a skirt to dinner.

…first Thanksgiving eating with a group of strangers who we now call friends!

    Happy late Thanksgiving to you!

  • Welcome to the Caribbean!

Several weekends ago, we took Elliott to swim and play at the beach for the first time! The YWAM base is a quick 10 minute walk from the beach…glory.

    And…!

He hated it. Literally, hated it. Poor kid :(. He was terrified of the sand.

Baby Shark was not a big fan of the sand…

So, he took a nap with Dad while I played in the ocean with friends.

Seriously now, could anything possibly be more darling??

Then he joined me in the ocean:

    Now there's a little smile!

He loved splashing in the ocean, but just really hated the wet sand…we even tried again after his nap! But we went back the next week and he had a blast playing in the dry sand…so…baby steps. Baby shark steps!

    Adios, Amigos

Leaving our family and friends is for sure the hardest part about leaving… We’re going to miss everyone so, so much…

    Adios, amigos
Lots of friends gathered to say goodbye, Mexican fiesta style.
Elliott wore this AWESOME hand-me-down from the Hippes! It’s a Mexican soccer jersey!!!
Elliott’s buddy Tony had on a matching jersey jacket!!
AND…there was a photo booth at our goodbye party…does it get much cooler than that?

    Adios, mejores amigos
A few of our friends came together to have a last supper with us. Not the best quality picture ever, but at least we got Duke the surf boarder in the background!

  • Do The Puyallup

    Do The Puyallup

The Puyallup Fair is so cool that its website is www.thefair.com. Now, come on…you don’t get much cooler than that.
Brian wanted to bring Elliott to his very first Puyallup Fair for one reason, and one reason alone…

    THE TRACTORS.
Elliott and I both learned about the two major tractor companies represented at the fair…John Deere (aka, “the green ones”) and Kubota (aka, “the orange ones”).
    Aww, yeah!

“Now what do I do? I can’t see over the steering wheel!”

“Oh! It helps when I stand up!”

“I’m getting the hang of it now!”

    Whoa.

    So happy!

He was made for “the orange ones”

I love this picture…can YOU find Elliott’s head??

    We Did The Puyallup…did you??

Grandpa and Nonna bought Elliott this little hat from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo…could he possibly be any cuter??

Kari and I were pregnancy bonding buddies, in the most unfortunate way. 🙁  Kari takes the cake for the worst pregnancies I’ve ever heard of. I sure did give her a run for her money though with mine :). We were so excited to see each other–not pregnant this time–and for our little buddies to finally meet. They are just 12 days apart!!

Here’s a pic from November when we were both almost 6 months pregnant.

And here are our boys…on the outside :). Yahoo!!!

You can see they called each other and both planned to wear stripes.
    And the girls…

    Bosom buddies 🙂

    Until next time, Colorado!!

  • The Mexican Mobergs

    The Mexican Mobergs

Those of you who know me, know the deep love I have in my heart for Mexicans. For Spaniards. For anyone with that perfectly brown skin, round brown eyes and dark brown hair. I really don’t know how on earth I ever gained such an affinity for Latinos. I always dreamed of marrying a Latino man. A very tall Latino man, that is. For as long as I can remember, I remember saying, “When I grow up, I want to teach English to little children in Mexico.” That was long before I had ever spoken a word of their language let alone set a foot on their land. When I began taking Spanish my freshmen year of high school, I quickly fell in love with the language, encouraging this little dream in my heart. The summer after my junior year I spent three weeks in Mexico studying the language and learning about the rich culture. I was captivated. My host family called me “Susy” because “Susana is far too formal,” my host mama explained. My host brother and sister quickly nicknamed me “Susips.”

I’ll never forget the vivid awakening I got the morning I arrived in Mexico at a mere 17 years old. My flight had arrived around 2am so by the time I got to the house it was somewhere around 4 in the morning. I started class that day, so I went to bed knowing I had just a couple hours to sleep. The loud knock that awoke me practically caused me to jump out of my skin.

I opened my eyes to see a wooden door that I did not recognize. I had no idea where I was. No idea. And some lady on the other side of the door, whom I didn’t know, was speaking some jumble of words that I did not understand. At all. I could tell by the inflection of her voice that she was asking me a question. After at least a minute of pounding and yelling at me, my first moment of recognition came.

    Spanish. She was speaking Spanish.

    Mexico. I was in Mexico.

Yes…that’s right. I flew in the day before, landed in the middle of the night, and now it was time for me to start my first day of classes. I was in what was to be my home for the next 3 weeks. The lady speaking was probably my host mom. I thought I had remembered meeting her several hours earlier…yes, I was sure that was her…

And all the while the pounding and talking continued and intensified. I snapped into reality. Focus! I told myself.

And finally, I caught a word: “Desayuno.” Oh, so familiar…Don’t fail me now, oh espanol. Clearly three years of high school Spanish was not enough to prepare me for this. Desayuno, desayuno…what does it mean…? Wait! I got it! BREAKFAST! It means “breakfast”! She’s asking me what I want to eat for breakfast!!

The excitement and pride only lasted a split second before it occurred to me that now that I knew what she was asking, I needed to ANSWER her. Okay, I can do this. I can do this. Breakfast words….hmmm, breakfast words…. My mind flipped through the pages of my 1985 Spanish textbook, trying to find the picture of the family sitting around the table eating one morning with all of the little breakfast words highlighted in bold. HUEVOS! I know how to say, “eggs”! I blurted it out as soon as it came to my mind, so relieved that my first morning would not be an epic fail.

“Huevos!” I shouted back. Come on, Susanne, think. “Huevos, por favor!” Good, good… “Me gustan huevos!”

Yes! I had done it! I had constructed my very first sentence ever in the Spanish real world.

Anyway. I regress. My point is, small beginnings. Verryyyy small beginnings. But those 3 weeks in Mexico were certainly foundational to my Spanish-speaking skills, which would be an integral part of the next several years of my life.

I went on to take AP Spanish as a Senior, studied in Spain my sophomore year of college, taught in a Spanish immersion classroom for my first teaching job…and all the while I dreamed of marrying that tall Latino man who would give me brown haired, brown eyed Latino babies one day. And my babies would grow up speaking both Spanish and English and we would all live happily ever after. In my waiting, I developed an affinity for naming my most endearing possessions with Spanish names. Most of you know Chiquita, my beloved Honda Accord (who has now grown up and moved out from under my roof…sniff, sniff.), Felipe, my  Mac Powerbook (who has been my almost constant companion for the last 6 years and who is, unfortunately, dying a slow painful death. I have to keep a close eye on Felipe because Brian keeps trying to put him to sleep for good) and of course, iPaco (nicknamed iPaquito) who is my sweet little ipod. I was a lady in waiting, but I wasn’t going to let them stop me from having little Latino loves.

But then…thee Mr. Brian Moberg walked into my life. Who is, incidentally, about as far from Latino as they come. (But he is quite tall!) When I’ve attempted to teach him Spanish in the past he always—and I mean always—responds with “Oui”…no matter what I’m saying. Sigh. When I fell in love with him, so did my dreams of living la vida loca.
But when we got pregnant, my passions were stirred once again and I began to dream. I was convinced—convinced—that the baby in my womb was part Latino. I just really believed my God could take Brian’s genes and my genes and form a little Latino baby in my womb. If God really loved me, maybe he would give me a brown baby. Hey, stranger things have happened. Maybe, when I ingested that parasite last summer in Mazatlan that made me so sick when I was 10 weeks pregnant with Elliott, it left a little trace of Mexicano in my womb…but only time would tell.

So when Elliott came out, with blue eyes and skin as fair as his mother’s (who was so pale when she was born that the doctors thought there was something terribly wrong with her), I realized fairly quickly that I needed to move on to greater dreams for my son. But, it wasn’t long before I started plotting to have a Spanish nanny come live with us. Not because I wanted a nanny, but because I wanted Elliott to grow up with Spanish influence. And I just really, really, really like being around Latino people!

Well, the Lord must have heard my prayers. Because several weeks ago, we were invited to go visit some new friends down at a YWAM (Youth With A Mission) base in–get thisBaja, Mexico. And, my gringo husband was actually excited about it! Visions instantly danced through my head of Brian, Elliott, and I wearing sombreros and eating tacos. I could hear Elliott toothlessly shouting out his first word: “guacamole.” I could see Brian wearing a cape and shouting “Ole!” as a giant bull ran past him. Yes…yes! My dream was being realized.

Here is a picture of Elliott with his feet on Mexican soil (err, concrete…) for the very first (and hopefully not the last!) time. Look at how overjoyed he is! He was made to be Mexican!!!! I’m just sure it’s in his blood!!
On our drive back across the border to the US, my heart was humming with overflowing joy. I was one happy Senora. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face as I drank in the reality of what had just happened. My 4 month old had had his very first trip to Mexico (outside the womb). As we drove by cars packed full with little brown children practically hanging out the windows, I have to admit that there was such a sense of feeling at home. I just love these people. I think they are hilarious and wonderful. No one does life like the Mexicans. You can’t sit in traffic without someone offering to wash your car (illegally) or give you a mango on a stick or cook you a burrito or sell you a giant life-sized plastic turtle. Because waiting in a line of cars for 75 minutes certainly makes one realize that one cannot go on one more second without that turtle in hand. Ahh, Mexico!

We were only in Mexico for a quick 48 hour whirlwind, but I just know it was the best 48 hours of Elliott’s entire existence. I even think he looks more like a Mexican now, don’t you?

    With love,
    The Mexican Mobergs
  • Welcome Micah James!

    Welcome Micah James!

Our sweet nephew was born to Kevin and Tabitha on June 3, 2011. He and Elliott are so close in age; it’s going to be so fun watching them grow up together! I’ve been so excited to see what he looks like to see if these cousins would look anything alike! Although their stats so far are pretty darn similar, I don’t think they look very related at all…

    Elliott’s stats when he was born: 8lbs 8oz, 21 1/4″ long
Micah’s stats when he was born: 8 lbs 5 oz, 21″ long

But look at how different they look! We’re hoping Micah will share some of his hair :).

    How cute is this picture?!

    Brothers and their boys

Micah is 4 days old in these pictures. Below is a picture of Elliott when he was 5 days old…still don’t look anything alike!

Congratulations, Kevin, Tabitha, Taylor and  Hailey!
We love the newest addition to the Moberg family!!

  • Memorial Moments with the Mausses

    Memorial Moments with the Mausses

Lucky for us, a friend of ours from church, who happens to be a good friend of Doug’s, got married over Memorial Day weekend and my brother was a groomsmen! I couldn’t have been happier than when I found out Doug was asked to stand beside our friends as they said their vows…this meant…HE HAD TO FLY TO TACOMA!!

So the whole fam decided to come out for the event, which blessed my socks off from here to Timbuktu. Not only is it wonderful to see them, but they would get to meet their new nephew, and Elliott and Fable would get to meet for the first time!

Meeting Uncle Doug for the first time!
Meeting Fable and Aunt Melanie! I love that everyone’s smiling in this picture!!

Fable wanted to be next to him and play with him on his play mat

    Um, hilarious…! I don’t think Elliott even noticed 🙂

Do you think we have the same eyes?!?

He slept through his first wedding (outside the womb) and most of the reception

    LOVE him…

Look at this face!! I can’t get enough of sweet Fable!! (And she is a spitting image of my nephew Jaxon in this picture!)

    So sweet

This is one of my favorite pictures from the weekend. Fable totally looks like a teenager here, doesn’t she?! “Aw, come ON, Mo-om!” Ha!! 🙂

Look at him! One hand behind his head like that! Haha!!
